Prepare
your system for a smooth DEFRAG
When you compose messages with your mail system;
letters with your editor or download files and
delete all these various undertakings, most of
the files are scattered all over many clusters
on your hard disk. The more you compose and delete,
load etc. your various files are no more bound
"together"; and when you load a specific
file you may find that it loads more slowly. This
slowness is happening because your hard disk is
fragmented. You need to run DEFRAG to reestablish
speediness: 1- Click Start 2- Accessories 3 -
System tools and finally 4- Disk defragmenter.
"Disk Defragmenter" will be completed
faster, smoothly, without many interruptions and
restarts if few programs are running altogether.
If not, the defragmentation process can hang-up
as running programs are making constant changes
to the hard disk.
The most common "disrupter" to
Disk Defragmenter action is a running Screen
Saver. Other program are also an obstacle
such as BlackIce Defender which is a very
useful desktop utility which protect you against
hackers attacks to your system when you are
surfing the net. (Virus scanning is not enough.

To smooth Disk Defragmenter action, you need
to make sure that all running programs are disabled
from the system tray. Particularly Screen
Saver and any Power Management utility you may
have installed. As for BlackIce Defender, it
is absolutely necessary to: 1- Stop its engine
first; and then 2- Exit it from the system tray;
if not, it is so powerful that it impeaches the
defragmentation process.
To disable all other running
programs, before performing the DEFRAG proceed
as follows:
1- Right-click on the desktop and choose Properties.
2- Click the Screen Saver tab and choose
None from the drop-down menu.
3- Click the Settings button in the Energy
Saving Features section and make sure System
is on Standby; Screen Saver is on
none; and Hard Disks and Monitor
are all set to Never.
I have a broadband connection with ASDL modem.
I found out that it is also necessary to turn
down the modem in order to have a nonstop DEFRAG.
Once your DEFRAG is completed you may revert
to your former settings.
